Last Tile Win (海底撈月) in Hong Kong Mahjong: Fan, Examples and Odds
In Hong Kong mahjong, the Last Tile Win (海底撈月, "catching the moon from the bottom of the sea") is worth 1 fan: you draw the last tile of the wall and it completes your hand for a self-drawn win.
It always comes together with Self-drawn (1 fan), so it is at least two fan; one more — No Flowers, All Chows, a dragon pung — and you reach the 3-fan minimum.

The rules for the Last Tile Win
- The tile you draw is the last tile of the wall — nothing is left after it
- It must be a self-draw; if someone discards the last tile and you win on it, this site gives no Last Tile fan (some tables score that separately as 海底撈針, this site doesn't)
- This site keeps no dead wall: the wall is played down to its last tile
- If the last tile is your replacement after a kong and you win on it, both Last Tile Win and Win on a Kong count
- If the last tile drawn is a flower, there is no replacement tile left and the hand is a draw
After the last tile has been drawn, its discard can only be won on — no chow, pung or kong (there's nothing left to draw).

How it relates to other hands
- Self-drawn: a Last Tile Win is always self-drawn; both count.
- Win on a Kong: if the last tile is a kong replacement, both count.
- Robbing a Kong: another timing fan; robbing is a win on someone else's tile, so it never combines with the Last Tile Win.
- The shape doesn't matter: All Chows, All Pungs, Mixed One Suit — the fan simply add up.
Last Tile Win odds
We let four of this site's computers (Normal level) play 100,000 hands and recorded how each one ended.
- 19% of hands reached the last tile with no winner and ended in a draw.
- The Last Tile Win came up 531 times, 0.66% of all wins — roughly once every 188 hands.
- Those wins averaged 4.1 fan.
You can't aim for a Last Tile Win — you don't control when the wall runs out. The practical lesson is: if you're still ready near the end, don't break your hand; the last tile is a chance too. To see how the last few tiles play out, open a table of online Hong Kong mahjong.
