Concealed Hand (Mun Chin Ching) in Hong Kong Mahjong: Fan, Examples and Odds

Concealed Hand example: 1-2-3 and 6-7-8 characters, 3-4-5 dots, a Green Dragon pung and a pair of 9 bamboo, all self-drawn

In Hong Kong mahjong, a Concealed Hand (門前清) is worth 1 fan: from the deal to the win you never chowed, punged or declared an exposed kong — every tile came from your own draws.

In Hong Kong scoring it counts on a discard win too; self-drawing adds Self-drawn (1 fan) on top.

No chows, no pungs: all four sets and the pair are in your hand — a Concealed Hand

The 3-fan minimum makes Concealed especially valuable: with no scoring honours and no one-suit hand, it's the easiest fan to keep, so the computers often decline a chow.

FAQ

How many fan is a Concealed Hand?

In Hong Kong mahjong a Concealed Hand is worth 1 fan. No chows, pungs or exposed kongs — on a discard or a self-draw.

Does a concealed kong break a Concealed Hand?

No. All four tiles of a concealed kong are self-drawn, so you keep it; exposed and added kongs do break it.

How many fan is a concealed self-draw?

Concealed (1 fan) plus Self-drawn (1 fan), and with No Flowers 3 fan in total — exactly the 3-fan minimum.

Does a discard win count as Concealed?

Yes. Hong Kong's Concealed Hand doesn't require a self-draw; winning on someone's discard still counts.
