No Flowers (Wu Fa) in Hong Kong Mahjong: Fan, Examples and Odds

No Flowers example: a concealed all-chows hand — 1 to 6 characters, 2-3-4 dots, 6-7-8 bamboo and a pair of 9 bamboo, no flower tiles

In Hong Kong mahjong, No Flowers (無花) is worth 1 fan: when you win, there is not a single flower tile in front of you — none in your opening hand and none drawn during play — and you add 1 fan.

Hong Kong mahjong uses all 144 tiles, including the eight flowers (four seasons and four plants). Flowers never stay in your hand: you expose one as soon as you draw it and take a replacement from the back of the wall. No Flowers sounds trivial, but at a 3-fan-minimum table it is often exactly the fan that decides whether you can win at all.

Concealed and all chows; with No Flowers that is exactly 3 fan — the 1 fan is only there if you have no flowers at all

The same hand, but you are East and drew Summer (South's flower) at the start: No Flowers is gone and it isn't your own flower, so only 2 fan — short of the 3-fan minimum, you can't claim that 9 bamboo.

Not every style has flowers: Sichuan mahjong has no flower tiles and Japanese riichi normally doesn't use them. Taiwanese mahjong also has eight flowers but scores them its own way — see the Taiwanese mahjong tai list.
