Round Wind Pung (圈風) in Hong Kong Mahjong: Fan, Double East and Examples

Round wind example: a pung of East wind, plus chows in dots and bamboo, a pung of 8 characters and a pair of 9 dots

In Hong Kong mahjong, a round wind pung is worth 1 fan: three (or four, as a kong) of the current round's wind — East in the East round, South in the South round — give one fan. The round wind is the same for all four players, whatever seat you're in.

If that wind is also your seat wind — for example the dealer (East seat) punging East in the East round — you score both the round wind and the seat wind fan. Players call it "double East".

The rules for a round wind pung

Which wind is the round wind

A full game has four rounds — East, South, West and North — and in each round every player deals once (repeat deals aside). On this site, "single hand" and "East round" games always use East as the round wind; only a full game reaches the South, West and North rounds.

How a round wind pung is scored

The fan below are computed live by the same scoring code the game uses.

Round wind pung (圈風)1
Seat wind pung (門風)1
No flowers (無花)1
Total3 fan

Anything over 10 fan scores 10 (the limit).

East round, East seat: punged East, chowed 2-3-4 dots, waiting on 9 dots for the pair, someone discards it — round wind plus seat wind, plus No Flowers: exactly three.
Self-drawn (自摸)1
Round wind pung (圈風)1
No flowers (無花)1
Total3 fan

Anything over 10 fan scores 10 (the limit).

South round, West seat, punged South: South is only the round wind, not your seat wind, so one fan; self-draw and No Flowers still make three.

How it relates to other hands

Round wind odds

A 13-tile opening hand has at least one wind pair (any wind) about 17% of the time; only one of the four winds is the round wind, so the chance of an actual round-wind pair is much smaller.

Over 100,000 hands of computers playing normally on this site, 10% of all wins included a round wind pung, and 10.0% a seat wind pung.

FAQ

How many fan is a round wind pung?

In Hong Kong mahjong a pung (or kong) of the round wind is worth 1 fan, for every player. If it's also your seat wind, add the seat wind 1 fan.

How many fan is double East?

In the East round, the East seat punging East scores round wind 1 fan plus seat wind 1 fan: 2 fan in total.

Does a round-wind pair score?

No. The round wind only scores as a pung or kong; as the eyes it's worth nothing.

How do I know which round it is?

The first round is East; once every player has dealt it moves to South, then West and North. The game screen shows the current round wind.
